Getting the message as a file

Your mail program can save a message as a file or show you its source. The steps differ between programs and versions; these are the usual ones.

Gmail

Open the message, open the three-dot menu beside the reply arrow and choose "Show original". Copy the source it shows and paste it into the box below.

Outlook

Open the message, choose File, then "Save As", and pick the .eml type if your version offers it. A .msg file is a different format and may not be read.

Apple Mail

Select the message, choose File, then "Save As", and pick Raw Message Source as the format.

Proton Mail

Open the message, choose "More", then "Export", and save the .eml file.

Thunderbird

Select the message, choose File, then "Save As", and save it as a file ending in .eml.

If you forward a message before saving it, the authentication results in the file come from the forwarding mail server, not from the original message.

Files ending in .eml or .txt are read. The limit is 10 MB.
